My Featured Film

The Elevator

I. About the Film

I Chose to analyse the short film ‘Elevator’ by Greg Glienna because comedy is my favourite genre, and the genre of the short film i am planning to make. It is similar to the one we plan to make because it is set in one location, and not many props are used and it is very simple. We do not have a budget and for this reason we must plan our short film realistically and make sure every scene can actually be carried out and filmed.     This short film was written and directed by Greg Glienna, the creator of ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Meet the Fockers’. He also plays the lead role.  Todorov’s theory of equilibrium can be represented in this short. The film starts of with a relaxed man in an elevator. A disruption occurs when a group of overweight people enter the elevator, exceeding the weight limit. A new equilibrium is set when the man leaves the elevator to enter a new one, filled with people who have swine flu. Levi Strauss’ theory of binary opposites can also be shown in this short. Binary opposites refers to the coming together of opposites. In this case, its skinny VS overweight, healthy VS unhealthy.       The main character is of middle class. You can tell because he is well groomed, has an expensive phone, and he is wearing smart clothes. He is also looking down at the people around him as if he is of higher status and more important.     It is shot in the elevator of a hospital. You can tell because the elevator is filled with overweight and un-well people. These are health related issues. Most short films have one, fixed location due to the limited time available. It also keeps costs low and simplifies the production process. High key lighting was used throughout the film. Most comedies use high key lighting to create a positive and lively feeling. It also gives us clear vision of what’s going on. For example, the weight of the people, what they’re wearing, their age and surroundings. It makes it easier for the viewer to analyse what’s going on. It is very easy to analyse the characters. The is a clear difference between the main characters and the extras. The extras have a very simple role. Little experience and movement is required in short films, as it is a simple job. The costume of the characters are very important because it explains their background.

II. Versions of the Film

The people who gained weight were coming into an elevator one after another, and it seemed to exceed weight excess. When trains were changed to other ones, virus infected patients took there.I think the strange affair which may happen to itself actually, too.

IV. My Reaction

A. Reaction Point - Mood(物語の雰囲気や、それが呼び起こす感)
 ● A story's atmosphere or the feeling it evokes.
Even if a main character behaves in order to do something, a different affair occurs again.
 ●It's fascinating there.

B. Reaction Point - scene(一度と空間で行われる物語のセグメント)
  • A segment in a narrative film that takes place in one time and space.
  • The affair which may happen actually in the elevator.
  • The people who gained weight in the elevator were coming in one after another, and it became overweight, so in a different elevator or, if I got it, we were virus infected patients of all the members there.

C. Reaction Point - Cinematography(映画の中のカメラワーク)
  • The clothing worn by the actors who play the characters.
  • The whole will be reflected , and it`s sometimes the lead`s look, and.
  • There were various cameraworks.

D. My General Opinion
I thought Greg Glienna sent both of a director and an actor and was a colorful person. There were no parts where I communicate, so it was easy to understand and fascinating.
